OBESITY AND DIABETES

I want to talk on obesity and diabetes today, it is a health condition that is prevalent nowadays both to young and old, male and female, rich and poor. I want you to know this fact that anyone that is obese is prone to any kind of disease. That is the reason why you should do something about it if you are obese and not just watching thing going worse. I want to assure you that you can do something about it and make your life better. Now let begin by having some knowledge to ourselves. What is obesity? Obesity is a medical condition in which excess body fat has accumulated to the extent that it may have a negative effect on health. And thus leading to a reduce life expectancy hence increases health problems. Obesity increases the likelihood of various diseases particularly heart disease, diabetes, arthritis, certain type of cancer, osteoporosis(bone-disease) etc. How do you know that you are OBESE? Obesity is known by calculating your BODY MASS INDEX(BMI), which is your weight in kilogramme WITH your height in metre square, i.e. you divide your Weight with the square of your height, this will tell you whether you are obese or not. To go about it mathematically, this how you compute your: BMI(Body mass index) = Weight(Kg) (Height)2 (m2) For example, if your weight is 56kg and your height is 1.64m, your BMI is : 56kg/(1.64)2 = 20.821 kg/m2. I hope you get it and now if you are the kind of people that use feet/foot or inches for your height, this is how you will do the calculation: Conversion from feet/foot or inches: 5ft = 9 inches 1ft = 0.3048 5ft = 0.3048 x 5 = 1.524 metre 1 inch = 2.54 cm 100 cm = 1 metre 2.54 cm = 0.0254 metre, therefore 1 inch = 0.0254 metre, Since 5ft = 9 inches 9 inches = 0.0254 x 9 = 0.2286 metre So if you are 5ft 9 inches = 1.524 + 0.2286 metre = 1.7526 metre If you are 176 cm tall = 176/100 = 1.76 metre . so that is how you calculate your height. We have ranges of measurement for BMI, if you fall under any of this range, you will know what your status is as regards obesity. RANGES OF MEASUREMENT Less than 18.5kg/m2 – Underweight 18.55kg/m2 – 24.9kg/m2 – Normal 24.9kg/m2 – 29.9kg/m2 – Overweight Above 30kg/m2 - Obese Above 40kg/m2 - Deadly Obese When it get to a certain stage in life (age 19) height is the same, but your weight may keep on changing.
